Volunteer drivers sought for Beverley community minibuses
Volunteers are being sought to drive community minibuses in Beverley to help local residents get out and about.
People with some time to spare are needed by the charity Beverley Community Lift to help older people, those with disabilities and residents living in rural, isolated areas travel to essential appointments, go shopping and go for days out.
Anyone interested in getting behind the wheel is invited to a taster session on Saturday 10 October at Beverley Enterprise Centre, Beckview Road, Beverley, from 9am-12pm, where they can find out more about becoming a volunteer, chat with current volunteers and give minibus driving a go.
The charity runs important community transport services for East Riding of Yorkshire Council including the Medibus, helping people to get to where they need to go.
People living in areas which may not be served by regular bus services or who may not have access to a car regularly use the door-to-door community minibuses.
Councillor Nick Coultish, the council’s cabinet member for culture, leisure, tourism and planning, said: “Community transport is incredibly important in the East Riding as some residents rely on these services to get to hospital or doctors’ appointments because they don’t have their own transport.
“I’d encourage anyone with spare time and enthusiasm to go along to this taster day, find out what it’s about and give minibus driving a go.”
Simon Home, who became a Beverley Community Lift volunteer after attending an earlier recruitment day, said “I thought it was a great way of supporting my community.
“I would certainly recommend this to anyone who has some spare time. I have met some lovely people who find it difficult to get out and about.
“It’s very rewarding knowing how much they appreciate the service and the time the volunteers give.”
Volunteer drivers will need a D1 driving licence provision.
There are three sessions at the taster day, at 9.30am, 10.30am and 11.30am.
Anyone interested can contact Beverley Community Lift on 01482 868082.
