Goole and Bridlington Women prosecuted after illegal waste found dumped
Two women, one from Goole and another from Bridlington, have been prosecuted after their waste was illegally dumped in two separate offences and ordered to pay a combined total of £494.
The women appeared at Beverley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 19 August after rubbish belonging to them was found abandoned in the East Riding.
Both pleaded guilty in two separate cases to failing in their duty of care to legally dispose of their waste.
Goole
Sophie Smith, formerly of Jefferson Street, Goole, admitted failing in her duty of care after waste was dumped in the alley between Jefferson Street and Carter Street in the town on three occasions.
She was fined £80 and ordered to pay £150 costs and a £32 victim surcharge – a total of £262.
The court heard that CCTV cameras recorded a person coming from Smith’s former address in Jefferson Street and then abandoning waste in the alley on 14 May, 20 May and 2 June last year.
Streetscene enforcement officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council found items dumped next to wheelie bins in the alley including two mattresses and a box.
Smith was the liable party at the Jefferson Street address.
Bridlington
Elizabeth Walker of Little Beck Road, Bridlington, admitted failing in her duty of care after household waste belonging to her was found dumped on the roadside in Woldgate on 9 March last year.
She was fined £80 and was ordered to pay £120 costs and a £32 victim surcharge – a total of £232.
The court heard, when she was interviewed by streetscene enforcement officers from East Riding of Yorkshire Council at an earlier date, Walker confirmed the waste had come from her address but said she had given it to someone else to dispose of.
Residents are responsible for disposing of their own rubbish properly and legally by using household wheelie bins provided or by taking larger items to their local household waste recycling site.
They can also hire a licensed waste carrier to take the rubbish away.
Carl Skelton, director of streetscene services at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Dumping waste is never acceptable. We provide proper and legal ways of disposing of it.
“Even if you give it to someone else to dispose of it, you are responsible for your own rubbish, and if it gets abandoned, we will take action where we can.”
Anyone caught fly-tipping in the East Riding could be ordered to pay a fixed penalty of up to £1,000 or the case could be taken to court, where they face an unlimited fine or even imprisonment.
In addition, any vehicles used in connection with the fly-tipping of waste can be seized and destroyed.
