First public consultation for new local plan begins

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has begun preparing a new local plan for the area and has published a timetable for its preparation.

The local plan sets out the long-term plan for development in the East Riding, containing policies to guide decisions and allocating sites that will provide new housing and employment opportunities. It is the starting point for determining planning applications and guiding investment decisions.

The council is required to begin preparing a new plan now due to a new 30-month local plan system announced by the government, which aims to introduce a faster and more streamlined plan preparation process. Once adopted, the new local plan will replace the 2025 Local Plan Update.

The next step in preparing the new local plan is a public scoping consultation which is open until Monday 31 August 2026.

Through this consultation, the council will invite feedback on the planning issues that need to be addressed in a new local plan and how this will align with national policy expectations.  It will also consult on how the council should engage with stakeholders throughout the plan-making process.

This scoping consultation with then inform the later stages of the plan-making process, which will need to identify the scale of development that will come forward over a 15-year period and specific sites where new development will be supported.
