Spanish learning opportunities expanding for East Riding residents
East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Adult Learning and Employability service is expanding its Spanish provision, with a new advanced Spanish class set to be available for residents.
The Spanish courses form part of the service’s Learning for Leisure programme. These are paid-for courses for adults aged 19 and over who want to develop their skills, explore an interest or enjoy learning something new.
The Spanish programme currently includes introductory and beginners Spanish, with a new advanced class under development to provide learners with a further opportunity to progress.
The programme welcomes new learners at all levels, whether they are complete beginners or already have some Spanish language skills.
The ‘getting started’ course introduces complete beginners to useful words, phrases and simple conversations, while the ‘beginners and improvers’ courses allow learners to gradually develop their vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar and confidence.
The forthcoming ‘advanced’ class, for those who have completed the previous programme or have an equivalent level of Spanish, will provide opportunities to develop longer conversations and express their ideas.
It will also explore topics including health and wellbeing, media and technology, Spanish and Latin American festivals and the changing environment.
Spanish courses are currently available at the Adult Learning centres in Beverley and Cottingham.
The courses are suitable for people learning Spanish for travel, personal enjoyment or simply the challenge of developing a new skill.
Residents do not need to know which course or level is right for them, as the Adult Learning team can help them identify the most appropriate starting point and discuss the learning, funding and support available.
Councillor Anne Handley, East Riding of Yorkshire Council Leader, said: “We’re proud to support lifelong learning, including Spanish. We encourage interested residents to find out more and get involved if they can.”
Alongside its paid-for Learning for Leisure programme, the Adult Learning and Employability service also provides a separate range of funded learning opportunities. Eligibility may apply depending on the course and an individual’s circumstances.
Funded learning can help residents improve their English, maths or digital skills, develop their English through English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), prepare for work, gain qualifications or take their next step towards employment, volunteering or further study.
Learning opportunities are available at Adult Learning centres in Beverley, Bridlington, Cottingham and Goole, with online learning courses also available.
