Coastal Navigators Network visits Bridlington to discuss health improvements

On Monday 13 July, leaders from across the country attended an event in Bridlington hosted by Lord Patel of Bradford, chair of the Coastal Navigators Network, to discuss the health challenges that coastal communities face.

The Coastal Navigators’ Network was established in response to Professor Sir Chris Whitty’s 2021 report on coastal health inequalities, which made clear that coastal communities need specific coastal models of improvement.

One of the most significant barriers in many coastal places is the lack of infrastructure able to respond to rising levels of health need and economic exclusion

Visitors toured the triangle of land  around Bridlington’s Town Hall, The Medical Centre and Crown Buildings. Many services are already delivered on that site, but there is planning permission in place to bring in My Dentist and other services, turning this part of Bridlington into a Live Well Campus.

Attendees watched a message of support from the Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire and participated in a roundtable with local, regional and national stakeholders, to discuss how towns such as Bridlington could best  be supported to achieve better outcomes.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, East Riding of Yorkshire Council Cabinet Member for Adults, Health and Care said: “This was a fantastic event to highlight the challenges that coastal communities face and discuss approaches to tackling these. The planned Live Well campus will be a key initiative to reduce inequalities in Bridlington and support better healthcare outcomes for local residents.”
