Built in Roman times, they've been added to and rebuilt over time and now have parts from across the centuries. Originally built as defences, the focus is now on conservation.

York also has a Designer Outlet Retail centre, Mc Arthur Glen is just a short drive from the A19/A64 interchange. The centre has 120 exclusive brands at permanently reduced prices; the top level has places to eat.

Other places out of town to do the shopping include Monks Cross Shopping Centre, which has a variety of shops along with two large supermarkets and the smaller Clifton Moor shopping centre.

The new Vangarde Shopping Park, which opened in 2014 and cost 90 million boasts a large Marks and Spencer, John Lewis and Next along with several places to eat.
